Shoot a Flintlock Rifle
America’s Founding Fathers Exhibit provides the unique opportunity to shoot an authentic Revolutionary War-era Kentucky long rifle, just like the ones our founding fathers used while fighting for freedom, at our on-site Gun Range.
Historically, the Kentucky long rifle replaced the European-made “Brown Bessie” muskets that were heavy, short-ranged, and wasted precious powder and lead—making them unsuitable for the American Frontier. During the fight for independence, American gunsmiths reduced the bores to a smaller caliber to conserve lead and powder, increased the barrel length for extra thrust, and finally “rifled” the barrel for further range and accuracy. The Kentucky long rifle quickly became famous for precision up to 300 yards.
Your experience at our range will begin with information about the gun, including how it was made and its use during the Revolutionary War. Then we’ll show you how the rifle operates and how to load it. We will give you a safety lesson and provide eye and ear protection.
You’ll get three shots with the Kentucky flintlock rifle with each ticket purchase. The entire experience takes about 20 minutes, and is a fascinating, hands-on way of learning more about the history of the United States through the weapons that were used to fight for the country’s freedom.
Register for firearm shooting at Independence Hall. Guests ages 16-17 must be accompanied by a parent or guardian. Our range is conveniently located north of our Independence Hall. The range uses two firing lines to shoot Revolutionary War-era replica Kentucky long rifles and you’ll be able to take aim at a selection of steel or paper targets.
